Desi Shack eyes outposts beyond Murray Hill

An Indian version of Chipotle is breaking out of Midtown East.

Desi Shack, an Indian style of design-your-own-fast food is set to open up two new locations this year, Side Dish has learned.

The made-to-order fast-food operation is a mom-and-pop shop — although mom and pop have corporate business backgrounds. It is currently located at 39th Street and Lexington Avenue in Murray Hill and is just beyond the “Curry Hill” restaurant row.

The concept is based on giving the customer the choice of ingredients and condiments to design their meal on the spot, a la Chipotle’s take on Mexican food, says Desi Shack founder Yasmin Ibrahim.

Brian Tregerman and Joseph Isa, of Winick Realty Group are scouting for spots to open in the next 12 months. They are looking at 600-to-1,500-square-foot spaces in the Financial District, Midtown West, Flatiron, Union Square, the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side.

European Wax Center Joins List Of Beauty Tenants At 222 East 34th Street

The personal grooming chain European Wax Center inked a 10-year lease on a 1,900-square-foot-store at 222 East 34th Street in the newly developed residential building The Anthem, The Commercial Observer has learned.

Other tenants to recently sign at the Murray Hill building include the local gym empire Crunch and Drybar, a salon capitalizing on the current craze for blowouts, making the 25-story, 480-unit The Anthem a one-stop shopping destination for personal improvement.

Winick Realty Group Managing Director Hal Shapiro and Associate Director Josh Siegelman represented the tenant and landlord, Rosebud Associates. “Murray Hill is a young, vibrant and affluent area of Manhattan and this influx of beauty and fitness tenants is a reaction to the unique needs of the neighborhood,” Mr. Shapiro said in a prepared statement.

European Wax Center, which offers face, body and nether regional waxing for men and women, has 420 locations across the country. The Murray Hill branch will be its sixth Manhattan location when it opens this spring.

“Blow Dry Bar” Drybar Opens at 222 East 34th Street

Drybar, a California-based chain of “blow dry bars” that offer blowouts for $40, has signed a long-term lease to open at 222 East 34th Street, The Commercial Observer has learned .

The blow dry bar (we’re debating calling it a “salon saloon”) will be taking a 1,900-square-foot space in the “The Anthem,” the newly constructed 25-story residential tower on 222 East 34th Street. This will be Drybar’s third location in the city. It already has two stores in the Flatiron District and inside Le Parker Meridien Hotel.

Asking rents for the retail space is $150-a-square-foot.

Hal Shapiro and Josh Siegelman, both of Winick Realty Group, represented Rosebud Associates, the landlord of 222 East 34th Street. Richard Skulnik of Ripco Real Estate represented Drybar.

Mr. Siegelman believed the Murray Hill demographic was the perfect fit for Drybar.

“Murray Hill has a very eclectic mix of young professionals, as well as some office population and hospital population,” he said.

Drybar was created by former stylist Alli Webb, who grew the business from a side-venture called “Straight-At-Home,” which offered clients in-home blowouts by appointment only. Drybar believed that people would pay professionals to blow dry their hair in place of themselves. There are no cuts or color performed in the store, according to its website.

New York Doctors Leases Second Walk-In Clinic

New York Doctors Walk-In Urgent Care has leased a second location in New York, this one at 205 Lexington Ave on the corner of 32nd Street. The tenant currently operates another location at 65 West 13th Street in Greenwich Village.

The walk-in medical clinic will occupy a 2,717 square-foot ground-floor facility offering emergency and general medicine care, as well as occupational medicine, physicals, x-rays, laboratory tests and vaccines.

The clinic is set to open in the next few months, taking over a space that previously housed a real estate office for a nearby condo development.

Jean Bates of A.C. Lawrence & Co. represented New York Doctors in this lease transaction. Winick Realty Group LLC Executive Vice President Darrell Rubens represented the landlord, Somerset Management, with Associate Director Lee Block and Associate Annie Shinn.

“This is a great location for them,” said Rubens. “They’re situated in the middle of Murray Hill, near NYU Langone Medical Center, Beth Israel Medical Center and many doctors’ offices.”
